How and why do children get kidney diseases?
- Some children are born with small kidneys which have very few filters. These kidneys are not able to clean the blood efficiently. They are able to clean the blood just 5 to 10 times in the day instead of the usual 30 to 60 times a day
- As a result many chemicals and minerals that the body does not need – such as urea, creatinine, potassium, phosphorous accumulate in the body. We call this ‘Kidney Failure’
- Sometimes the filters are normal in number at birth but are destroyed later because of infection, stones or other diseases
- Sometimes the damaged filters are not destroyed totally but they become leaky. Proteins and blood which should not normally leak out enters the urine throught the leaky filters. One of the diseases that cause leaky filters is known as ‘Nephrotic Syndrome’. If recognized early and treated rightly the leak can be stopped and the kidney can be saved from damage.
