Functions of Kidneys
Kidneys clean our blood. They throw away all the excess water, salts and bad chemicals that collect in the blood into the urine. We have two kidneys to do this work. The kidneys are located in the back on either side of the backbone at the waist level just below the rib. The kidneys look like Rajmah beans.Only they are much bigger. Each kidney is the size of the person’s fist. The kidneys have filters to do this work. The kidneys have one million filters called NEPHRONS to do all this work. As the blood flows through the kidneys they have to pass through these filters. These filters are very efficient security guards
Kidneys keep back all the good things that the body needs and throw away all the bad chemicals and extra water in the urine. The filtered urine is collected in a funnel and is carried by two long tubes – one from each kidney- to a bag called the ‘bladder’, where the urine is stored. When the bladder is full we fell like passing urine and the urine is thrown out.The kidneys clean the blood almost continuously.without any rest. The entire blood in our body is cleaned anywhere from 30 to 60 times in the day.
